When Is It Truly Too Late?

3 min readFeb 28, 2025

Reading a recent AARP article, the author asked, “When am I too old to buy a new sofa, go to law school or get a new dog?” She was discussing the topic from the perspective of an 80- or 90-year-old.

She wondered about the sensibility of buying a new sofa because she might not live long enough to get her money’s worth. Would such a purchase be frivolous considering her age?

She pondered attending law school at an advanced age and whether she’d be able to actually practice law.

She even thought about the dilemma of raising a new dog because her current furry friend had passed, and who might raise a new one if she passed.

These are all valid questions, but my take on it is this: As long as I am living, breathing, and able, I want to take in all that life has to offer!

If I buy a new sofa and expire the next day, so be it. I will have had the thrill of purchasing it and rearranging my furniture. Then I will experience relaxing and/or napping on my new sofa, even if it is only for a short time. The money won’t help me where I am going anyway.

Law school might not be a good ROI (return on investment) for the time and monetary expense, but if I want to challenge my brain and banter legal topics with younger classmates, why not? Lots of people go to law school and never work as a lawyer. Even more people attend law school and never finish, so what’s the big deal? Doing something you enjoy is still a good use of your time!

As for the dog, I wouldn’t want to miss out all the comfort only a pet can give and receive. I have seen some folks spoil their dogs and treat them better than their own children! (Hey Mom, are you listening?) Speaking of children, do parents decide not to have children just because something might happen to them? No, they seek the joys of parenthood for whatever time they have. Enjoying life along with the people and furry friends you surround yourself with is part of our human experience. It beats the heck out of just waiting around for your expiration date to arrive.

So my advice to you is if someone questions whether or not you should do something at your age, respond something along the lines of, “Just watch me.”

After all, it is never too late to live the life you have imagined!
