Why Is Travel So Important?
What are your travel plans for this year?
Travel changes you, as I was reflecting early today as I browsed yet another travel magazine. I thought about the many places I have had the good fortune to visit and the experiences that came with it — from soaking/swimming in the hot baths of Pamukkale,Turkey; to watching the amazing Military Tattoo in Edinburgh, Scotland (a yearly performance showcasing military bands throughout the world); to the Christmas Market in Munich; riding the horse trails in the majestic openness of Wyoming; enjoying traditional Moroccan food and music on a day trip from southern Spain; and swimming in the Nile River.
It is not just the physical location, seeing the sites, and meeting the people. It is more. It is being absorbed into their way of life, their culture and religion. It expands one’s horizon. You realize there is more to life than your little “neck of the woods”. You see how other people “do life” in their own way.
You learn something new, perhaps that you will incorporate into your own life. Daily naps like they do in Spain, comes to mind! Or time to relax while you eat with family and friends — a normal part of life in Italy and Croatia. You learn not to take yourself so seriously. You learn to slow down. You learn to enjoy life!
You learn about history in another country or part of the U.S. You learn about yourself, like how to navigate back to your hotel after you’ve gotten lost wandering around the cobblestone streets of Venice, Italy.
Lastly, you learn how much more you appreciate a place called ‘”home” once you return.
What are your travel plans for this year? If you need suggestions or inspiration — check out the many travel groups on Facebook. I belong to a few for Solo Women Travelers. These women make my travels look like a beginner’s class for they go solo to places like China, India, and other countries I can’t even locate on a map without the help of Google.
My challenge to you is to write your bold “someday” travel plans in the comments section and we can encourage each other to take steps towards making it happen. After all, travel is necessary for living one’s best life — something we ALL can and should do!
